For many assignments throughout the course, you will need to produce a flowchart. While this can be done in many different types of tools, I recommend a tool such as MS Visio or LucidChart.
All flowchart assignments must be submitted as a PDF file.
Mar 01, 2019 Click the Import button on the Lucidchart file manager and and select Import Visio. Choose your VSD file and click the Import button. Wait a moment until Lucidchart is done importing your file and click the Done button. To open the imported files, return to file manager. Open Microsoft Visio files inside your Box account with the new default viewer from Lucidchart. Once to open the Visio file in. Lucidchart is one of the few applications that can import documents from Microsoft Visio. Once you’re online, it's easy to collaborate with team members.
Visio
If you attempt to import a file into Lucidchart that is not a valid Visio file, you will encounter an error message. Keep in mind that a non-Visio file can have a Visio file extension (e.g.vsdx) if someone changed the extension manually. To verify that a file is a valid Visio file, try opening the file in Visio. Once you’ve installed the extension, you can: Open OmniGraffle files from your computer ★ Click the Lucidchart icon on your toolbar and select “Choose file”. Alternatively, you can drag and drop an OmniGraffle file onto the page. As a cloud-based tool, Lucidchart is.
Visio is a great choice for Windows users, as it is available free to students through the campus Microsoft Imagine program. Information on how to get software through this program is available on D2L.
Screenshots below are from Visio 2016. Other versions may appear slightly different, but general flowcharting functionality should be the same.
Create a new Diagram
To create a new flowchart in Visio, select the File menu, then New. Under Featured templates, you should see the Basic Flowchart.
If you do not see it displayed as shown above, you can switch to Categories and select Flowchart, then Basic Flowchart from there.
Submit As PDF
When you have completed your assignment, you should save it in two formats.
First, save it as a Visio file so that you can open and edit it later:
Then, save it as a PDF document to submit to the assignment box:
LucidChart
If you do not have access to Visio (Mac users for example), another alternative is LucidChart which is cloud software. There is a free version that works for up to 3 diagrams of up to about 60 shapes each. For students who have registered for a free account using their student email can request a free upgrade to the pro edition. Link for student upgrade: https://www.lucidchart.com/pages/usecase/education
Create a new Diagram
To create new flowchart, start by clicking the button for a new document.
When prompted for the type, select Flowchart in the Categories listed along the right side. Then choose the blank template.
When you create your first diagram, “Getting Started” tips will be shown to help guide you through the process of creating your first flowchart.
Work with Visio Diagrams
With LucidChart, you can import any Visio diagrams from class to view, but unless you have an upgraded account, they will not be editable.
Download Diagrams
The best option for downloading the flowchart for your assignment submission is to Export the file as a PDF document.
Other Tools
If you have another tool that you would like to use to make your flowcharts, that is acceptable if the following conditions are met:
- The diagrams are clear & readable
- The symbols used are the same as those used in the examples on the course web site and in class.
- The diagram is submitted to the assignment box as a PDF file.
The only file type that is accepted for assignment submission will be a PDF. This allows me to easily print and mark-up assignments for grading if needed. No credit will be given for any other file submission.
